Privacy & Legal Notices

Privacy of Your Information

This page explains how I handle your health information, and what rights you have. Please read it.

Accel Counseling Corp is a private, self-pay practice. I do not bill insurance, and I do not send your health information to any insurer electronically. I follow California’s medical privacy law (CMIA) and my licensing board’s rules.

What does apply, however you pay, is California’s Confidentiality of Medical Information Act (Civil Code §56 and following), along with the standards of the California Board of Behavioral Sciences and the CAMFT Code of Ethics. Under all of them I keep your information private, within limits the law sets. The main ones are below, and I go over all of them at intake.

Where the law requires disclosure. California requires me to report suspected abuse or neglect of a child, an elder or a dependent adult. It requires me to take protective steps when a client presents a serious danger to themselves or to a person who can be identified. And it requires me to respond to a valid court order.

Treatment. Your health information can be used and shared for your treatment, including coordinating care with other providers, with your written authorization or where the law permits.

Anything else needs your authorization. Most other uses or disclosures require your written authorization, and you can revoke that authorization in writing at any time.

Your rights. You can ask to see or get a copy of your records. The law allows a few exceptions. You can ask me to contact you in a particular way. You can ask for limits on how your information is used. You can complain. To do any of these, email jon@accelcounseling.com.

Complaints. If you believe your privacy has been mishandled, tell me first if you are willing to. You can also file a complaint with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, which licenses me, or with the California Attorney General under the Confidentiality of Medical Information Act. You will not be penalized for complaining.

Good Faith Estimate: No Surprises Act

You have the right to a Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost, in writing, before you schedule. Ask me for one at any time.

If a bill comes in at least $400 above the estimate, you can dispute it. There is more at cms.gov/nosurprises.

To request one: (310) 692-4114 or jon@accelcounseling.com.

Telehealth Disclosure

I offer therapy by video and phone to people in California. Sessions are only available while you are physically in California.

You are responsible for being somewhere private. Video carries privacy risks even with reasonable safeguards. Some situations are not right for telehealth, and I will say so if that is the case.

Jon B. Pease, LMFT #48823, is licensed to provide telehealth to residents of California only.

Contacting the Practice

You can call or text the practice number. Text and email are not secure or confidential channels, so anything about your care should go through the client portal.

If you need help now, do not wait for a reply from me. Nothing on this website is a substitute for emergency mental health services. Call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, free and answered around the clock, or call 911 if someone is in immediate danger.
